Arts & Athletics
The Children’s Montessori & Preparatory School offers a dynamic and enriched educational experience enhanced by a variety of extra-curricular activities to meet the needs of the whole child. Students enjoy a variety of opportunities including art, drama, music, chess club, and community service. They participate in an annual spring concert to showcase their band instrument and choral skills, learn public-speaking techniques, and create science fair projects. Students then share their talents with the community through the Kiwanis Music Festival, spelling bees, the Peterborough Regional Science Fair, the CMS annual family chess tournament, the Lion’s Club Literary Contest, the Santa Claus Parade, and a variety of other community-based activities and initiatives.
Physical education, as part of the curriculum, is integrated through structured indoor and outdoor programs. Students also participate each year in the regional track and field meet. CMS enjoys an excellent partnership with Trent University’s Athletic Centre. Students spend one morning a week for six weeks at the Symons Campus, where they take part in a variety of activities, including: rock climbing, martial arts, sports, dance and hiking programs. All instructors are Trent Summer Sports Camp staff members. They are trained and experienced in working with children in a physical/sport environment. Their goal is to design and instruct programs to keep students of all ages engaged, active and having fun. The staff members also provide the students with positive role models of activity.
Our music program at CMS is burgeoning, and upper elementary students now take instrumental music as part of the curriculum, playing brass, woodwind and percussion instruments. We also offer our students private piano lessons.
